The same nutrient film principle as the 100 x 50 mm channel in a deeper section, which gives a heavier root mass somewhere to go. It is the size to use where the smaller channel would silt up with roots partway through a cycle.
The lid opens, which matters more in practice than it sounds: a channel that can be opened can be inspected, cleaned properly between cycles and unblocked without being cut. Extruded from virgin UPVC, in 10 ft and 20 ft lengths.
