Hydroponics in Mumbai

In Mumbai the constraint is never sunlight. It is floor area.

Almost every hydroponic question that comes out of this city is really a question about square feet: a terrace, a setback, a balcony, the roof of a warehouse in Bhiwandi. That changes which system is the right answer. Where a grower with land would lay flat NFT runs, a Mumbai grower goes upward, and the plant count that matters is the one per square foot of floor rather than per acre.

/01 What grows here

The crops worth the structure in Mumbai

Not everything is worth growing without soil. These are the ones where the return justifies the system, and where the local market is already asking for them.

  • Microgreens

The highest value per square foot of anything on this page, and the shortest cycle. Seven to fourteen days from sowing, sold to restaurants and cloud kitchens that will take a standing weekly order.

  • Lettuce and Asian greens

Butterhead, oak leaf, pak choi. Stacked on an A-frame these give several times the plant count a flat bench of the same footprint would.

  • Basil and soft herbs

A crop that is cut, sold and cut again, which suits a small area that has to keep earning. Basil in particular travels badly, so the local grower has a genuine advantage over a supplier trucking it in.

  • Cherry tomato and strawberry

Both work on a terrace in dutch buckets or vertical towers if you have the height and six hours of direct light. Slower to pay back than leaf, and worth being honest with yourself about the light first.

/02 What it has to cope with

Designing for Mumbai, not for a catalogue

Humidity, not heat, is what costs you the crop

Mumbai does not get as hot as inland Maharashtra, but it stays wet. Through the monsoon the disease pressure on a poorly ventilated structure is severe, and air movement matters more here than shading does. Design for airflow first.

Salt air eats the wrong metal

Close to the coast, mild steel that would last years inland will not. UPVC channels and galvanised framing are the specification, and it is cheaper to buy that once than to replace a rusted frame in year three.

We manufacture in Katraj and deliver into Mumbai. Say what your access is like when you enquire -- a terrace reached by a lift and a narrow stair changes how a system should be sectioned before it leaves here.

What we would supply

  • A-frame and vertical NFT racks
  • Compact bench systems for terraces
  • Microgreen trays and growing media
  • Nutrients in pack sizes that suit a small area
