Dutch Bucket System

Bato-style buckets for tomato, capsicum and cucumber, plumbed as one line with a shared drain.

Dutch buckets, also called bato buckets, suit the vine crops that NFT does not: tomato, capsicum, cucumber, anything that grows tall and roots heavily and would strangle a channel.

Each bucket holds a growing medium and a reservoir under it, so the roots keep a buffer of solution between irrigations. That buffer is exactly what NFT lacks, and it is why a dutch bucket line survives a pump outage that would cost you an NFT crop.

The buckets connect to one another and drain to a common outlet, so a row is one plumbing run rather than a set of pots to be watered.
