Clay balls in the finer grade - LECA for net cups and smaller plants.
Expanded clay pebbles -- LECA, hydroton, clay balls, all the same thing -- are clay fired until it expands and goes porous. The result is light, holds a little water and a lot of air, and does not break down, so unlike coco or peat it is not a consumable you rebuy every cycle. Wash it between crops and it goes back in.
The 8-15 mm grade is the one for net cups and smaller plants, where a coarser pebble would leave gaps a young root cannot bridge.
